Networking and security specialist partners expected to sign up

Avnet Technology has launched a  breed of security services which are designed to protect customers from Denial of Service attacks.

The idea is that its UK business partners will be able to take the package to their mid-market enterprise datacentre customers.

By working with DDoS mitigation supplier, Webscreen Systems, Avnet’s business partners can offer a four hour response to a DDoS attack on an enterprise datacentre. Avnet Technology’s head of solutions strategy Bruce Hockin said DDoS attacks were becoming common.

It used to be that attackers were interested in targeting telecom carriers, major corporations and government departments and agencies. But the scene has changed considerably since hacker groups began to use DDoS attacks as a weapon of choice, either to shut down a company or to cover for another attack.

Avnet’s DDoS attack control service is for organisations with mid-sized datacentres which are open to attack.

The DDoS attack control service is designed for organisations that want to protect themselves against the damage caused by a DDoS attack without spending too much. Users pay an annual fee. In the event of a malicious DDoS attack, an engineer will show up equipped with Webscreen technology to deal with the situation.

Hockin said that Avnet business partners can sell a service directly to their customers to generate repeatable revenue with healthy margins.

The new service offering will be of particular interest to existing Avnet business partners specialising in networking and security, giving them an additional opportunity to help their customers reduce exposure and lower risk from a DDoS attack, Hockin said.
