HP opens ProLiant to Ubuntu-based server packages

HP is teaming up with Canonical to certify and support Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on select HP ProLiant Systems.

This means that HP resellers can offer Ubuntu 12.04 as a supported server.

Ubuntu users will get an HP hardware warranty and support.

Scott Farrand, vice president, Infrastructure Software and Blades, HP said that the collaboration is designed for hyperscale customers and to keep Canonical and HP actively engaged in the merging category of servers based on ARM chip designs.

Organisations using Ubuntu on HP ProLiant servers can expect to receive scalability and flexibility to manage big data, cloud and hyperscale applications.

Initially the two will focus on qualifying Ubuntu onto existing models of the ProLiant range and putting the processes in place to ensure that Ubuntu is in place from the launch day of the new models.

The idea is that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will be fully HP Certified when released on 26th April 2012.

Farrand said that Ubuntu provided the infrastructure necessary for the distributed applications that are changing the way businesses manage big data, hyperscale and cloud computing.

If a package is designed for HP ProLiant servers that use Ubuntu on HP ProLiant servers it should scale nicely.

He said that customers running Linux want choice when deploying an operating system that can support heavy workloads.
