vSphere Data Protection to use EMC’s Avamar software

VMware has joined up with parent company EMC to deliver backup and recovery with vSphere 5.1.

Using storage giant EMC’s Avamar data deduplication  software, VMware has integrated the Data Protection software into its vSphere virtualisation operating system.  The service will now replace vSphere Data Recovery.

In the announcement made during VMworld 2012, VMware said that vSphere Data Protection can be managed directly through Vmware’s Web Client, and  the virtualisation software vendor reckons that it will attract the attention of SMB customers.

“Backup and recovery is a critical element of virtualisation implementations, Bogomil Balkansky, Senior Vice President, Cloud Infrastructure Products, VMware. “Our selection of EMC Avamar technology enables us to deliver better backup and recovery capabilities directly from the VMware vSphere platform.”

“VMware vSphere Data Protection represents a tremendous value-add for our customers and delivers yet another point of differentiation for vSphere 5.1.”
