Advantech, a leading global manufacturer of ruggedized embedded computing products, services and IoT (Internet of Things) solutions, today announced support for NXP® i.MX 8 applications processors in its development platforms.

Advantech also announced an expanded partnership with Timesys (https://www.timesys.com), industry pioneer and leading provider of embedded, open source software, engineering services, and security solutions, to offer the Timesys Vigiles Security Monitoring & Management Service to Advantech customers.

Advantech has introduced two NXP i.MX 8 applications processor-based modules to its product line. The ROM-7720 Qseven 2.1 Computer-on-Module, based on the i.MX 8QuadMax, is designed for graphics-intensive IoT applications. It features strong image processing capability and aims to realize multi-display human-machine interfaces, advanced driver assistance systems, robotic vision, precision advertising systems, and medical image processing.

The ROM-5720 SMARC 2.0 Computer-on-Module features an NXP i.MX 8M applications processor which includes dual and quad-core Arm® Cortex®-A53 processors in combination with one Cortex-M4 real time processor and Vivante GC7000 Lite 3D Graphics engine. It provides USB3.0, two Gigabit Ethernet, two MIPI-CSI, PCI Express, HDMI 2.0 up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz and MIPI-DSI for embedded applications, making it the ideal solution for transportation, infotainment, vending, medical, and more.

Both newly released i.MX 8-based modules support Linux® and Android™ OS, and have Advantech’s WISE-PaaS/Edgesense built in, providing support for RMM and OTA features, thus enabling remote monitoring and management and over-the-air updates for IoT and industrial IoT applications.

Advantech i.MX 8-based module customers can use the Timesys Vigiles service to streamline security maintenance for embedded systems incorporating open source components including Linux with the Yocto Project®. The service enables product developers to ensure their products stay secure in today’s heightened security breach environment.

The new offering expands the Vigiles service to encompass the extensive i.MX applications processor families. Advantech customers engaging in i.MX processor-based projects will receive three months free of charge for Vigiles Prime, the top tier of the Vigiles security monitoring service.

Vigiles enables developers using Advantech platforms incorporating NXP i.MX applications processors to continuously monitor and identify vulnerabilities in open source software components and Linux distributions that affect their products. The service includes tools allowing developers to address any security issues rapidly and efficiently, cutting security maintenance time and cost by an estimated 90 percent based on Timesys’ project metrics.

Furthermore, Timesys offers a complete development solution that enables device developers to accelerate time-to-market for open source-based products that are “Secure by Design” and “Stay Secure” with Timesys BSP Lifecycle Maintenance service that handles security updates, patching, and other key tasks throughout the product lifecycle.

“Strong security for products built using our platforms is an essential requirement in today’s heightened vulnerability environment,” said Alex Lin, Director of Product Management, Advantech. “Timesys’ Vigiles service enables our customers to bring products to market very quickly using open source components, but also do so with peace of mind that these products are as secure as possible throughout their lifecycles.”

“Our i.MX line of processors provides the foundation of today’s most advanced embedded system products,” said Robert Thompson, i.MX Ecosystem Manager at NXP Semiconductors. “Now, thanks to the security partnership of Advantech and Timesys, these products can be among the industry’s most secure solutions as well, ensuring that end-user customers are continuously protected against vulnerabilities and exploits.”

“Hundreds of software vulnerabilities are announced every week, and monitoring and analyzing them has never been more critical than it is today,” said Akshay Bhat, Timesys Director of Engineering. “This partnership makes it very easy for Advantech customers using NXP i.MX processors to track, investigate and fix vulnerabilities in their embedded system products before they become a security problem.”

Vigiles improves product security with automated vulnerability monitoring, filtering and patch notification, supporting high-efficiency vulnerability management workflows for vulnerability detection, investigation and mitigation. Vigiles enables product developers to improve embedded system security all while cutting the effort spent on security maintenance tasks.
