Today artificial perception pioneer AEye announced it has been named to the Forbes AI 50, a list of the top private companies using artificial intelligence to transform industries.

AEye was selected for its use of intelligent LiDAR (iDAR™) to help self-driving cars safely navigate their environment. iDAR is AEye’s breakthrough perception innovation which leverages artificial intelligence to enable self-driving cars to intelligently assess hazards and respond to changing conditions. By capturing better information, faster, using a fraction of the data current sensor systems demand, AEye’s system increases time-to-reaction, thus safety for autonomous vehicles.

Forbes, in partnership with Meritech Capital, evaluated hundreds of companies to come up with its AI 50 list. Each was evaluated based on metrics like revenue, growth, and valuation, with a panel of experts weighing in on how innovative and mission-critical each company’s use of AI is. Other winners in the transportation sector included Aurora, Kodiak Robotics, May Mobility and Nuro.

“We are honored to be named to the Forbes AI 50, and to be recognized as a leader and innovator in applying artificial intelligence to solve the issue of safe vehicle autonomy,” said Abhijit Thatte, VP of AI and Software at AEye. “By combining software extensibility, AI, and smart, agile sensors, we are providing self-driving vehicles a perception system that works at least as fast as humans – a precursor to widespread commercial rollout of autonomous cars.”

AEye recently published two white papers on AI-based perception. The first is on the use of biomimicry in AI architecture to create responsive, intelligent machines. The second looks at new metrics to help perception engineers better evaluate the extended capabilities of AI-enabled intelligent LiDAR sensors.
