UpToDate Advanced clinical pathways target common medical conditions with unwarranted variability in care, helping clinicians meet national and international quality measures. Care variations can be costly for hospitals. After analyzing care variation in 468 hospitals, The Advisory Board found that a typical facility could save up to $29 million annually by delivering care in line with cost benchmarks for high-quality hospitals.

UpToDate Advanced supports appropriate treatment decisions with evidence-based clinical decision-making. It helps clinicians reduce inappropriate testing and treatments and provides guidance on when and which antibiotics should be prescribed.

“Healthcare organizations across the globe are working hard to address the variability that stands in the way of effective care,” said Priti Shah, Vice President, Products and Solutions, Clinical Effectiveness at Wolters Kluwer, Health. “We’re committed to helping our customers provide the very best care to their patients, and UpToDate Advanced helps make this possible with 58 interactive pathways that cover conditions with known clinical variability.

Clinicians are also taking advantage of over 100 Lab Interpretation monographs to more accurately interpret abnormal lab results, helping to address another source of care variation.

“With our vast footprint of hospitals, clinics and senior living facilities across 26 states, reducing variations in care is a critical part of our efforts to improve outcomes and increase patient safety,” said Heidi Twedt, MD, CMIO at Sanford Health. “The interactive pathways in UpToDate Advanced have helped us streamline workflows and harmonize clinical decision-making across care teams and locations.”

In 2019, some of the top clinical pathways clinicians turned to in UpToDate Advanced include Atrial Fibrillation, Hyponatremia, Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

The Veterans Health Administration, a part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and also the largest healthcare system in the United States, recently added UpToDate Advanced to its range of solutions from Wolters Kluwer.
