The EarlyBird game-based early literacy assessment from EarlyBird Education has been named a winner in the Primary (K-6) category of the 2021 Tech & Learning Awards of Excellence for Best Tools for Back to School.

The Best Tools for Back to School is a new awards program recognizing outstanding education products that support effective teaching and learning as teachers and students head back to school. An Award of Excellence represents the highest approval rating based on evaluation by actual educators. Evaluation criteria included ease of use, value, versatility, and the product’s ability to solve a relevant education challenge.

“As we head into another uncertain year in education, technology will continue to be one of the key drivers for innovation,” said Tech & Learning Group Publisher Christine Weiser. “Our judges chose the winning products recognized here for their versatility, compatibility, value, and ability to help schools solve challenges and support continuous instruction. Congratulations to all of our winners.”

Developed and scientifically validated at Boston Children’s Hospital in partnership with faculty at the Florida Center for Reading Research, EarlyBird brings together all the relevant predictors of reading in one easy-to-administer assessment. Students self-administer the EarlyBird screener using a tablet and headset. With just minutes of tablet game play, EarlyBird can predict the potential for dyslexia or other reading difficulties in pre-readers, and support teachers with data and targeted resources so they can intervene earlier.

“Children enter kindergarten with a variety of experiences and differing degrees of readiness for reading,” said EarlyBird Education Co-founder and CEO Carla Small. “EarlyBird empowers educators to replace the old ‘wait to fail’ paradigm with a proactive, preventive tool to identify and support children before they start struggling with reading.”
