Excella, a leading Agile technology firm, today announced that its Extension Center intern program has been ranked #3 in Vault.com’s “2020 Best Tech & Engineering Internships.” Based on a nationwide survey of 14,000 current and former interns, the program is also ranked #6 for “Best Internships for Employment Prospects” and #11 for “The 100 Best Internships.”

Excella’s Extension Center, located on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, provides high-achieving computer science students the opportunity to work side-by-side with Excella’s experienced software developers to build technical skills while providing remote software development support to the company’s clients in the federal, commercial and nonprofit sectors. Successful rising seniors are often invited to participate in a 12-week summer associate program in the DC metro area, and graduating seniors are invited to interview for full-time roles.

Vault’s rankings and reviews are sourced from directed surveys of professionals and students and evaluate companies, schools and internships in terms of prestige, best place to work, diversity, quality of life, compensation and other categories.

“The Extension Center is thrilled with Vault’s ranking today and the impact we’ve had on our interns over the first ten years of the program. The ranking is a testament to the passion of our mentors for their technical craft and their role preparing our interns for success as technical professionals. I am proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited for the Extension Center’s next chapter,” said Margaret Archer, Excella’s Director of University Programs.

Beginning in 2020, Excella’s Extension Center is relaunching as the Exelaration Center and plans to establish additional Exelaration Centers, expanding its mentor-based internship model beyond its headquarters in Virginia Tech’s Corporate Research Center. For interns and employers alike, this is excellent news as this provides more opportunities to grow relevant job skills with different projects, technologies, industries and employers. Companies who thought a world-class internship program was out of reach will be able to partner with Exelaration Centers to build their future workforce, using their own software development projects as the learning vehicle.

“Every barrier to having an internship program will disappear; no company should be without a renewable tech talent pipeline that starts on campus,” said Exelaration CEO Steve Cooper. “Today’s technology-driven organizations need a job-ready workforce, in addition to world-class software, and these Exelaration Centers will deliver both.”

The new centers will focus on building custom technology intern teams for corporations and nonprofits. Offering students critical business skills aside from software development for workplace success, each Exelaration Center will be a university-based, year-round program that assembles diverse teams of student software engineers supporting real-world clients under the mentorship of highly experienced senior technologists.
