Virtustream, an enterprise-class cloud company and a Dell Technologies business, today announced Franciscan Health’s migration of its Epic electronic healthcare records (EHR) to the Virtustream Healthcare Cloud. The successful movement of its EHR platform is an integral part of the healthcare organization’s long-term strategy to exit the data center business and expand its cloud strategy in order to focus more staff resources on patient care initiatives.

With 18,000 full and part-time employees serving patients in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, Franciscan Health expects to benefit greatly from Virtustream’s IT staff augmentation model, allowing the healthcare organization to focus more on optimization – versus daily operations – of its mission-critical EHR platform. The migration also addresses an important need to enhance the speed and agility of its business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities, as well as improving overall flexibility to make it easier to add new IT capabilities in the future.

Franciscan Health is also using Virtustream’s xStreamCare managed services to drive operational efficiencies, optimize workloads and free internal IT staff to focus on more strategic and innovative projects across patient care and business initiatives.

“Partnering with Virtustream will help us support better patient care outcomes and the delivery of more agile and modernized IT and business processes,” says Charles Wagner, CIO, Franciscan Health.

Successful Migration to the Cloud Enhances IT Agility and Delivers New Levels of Efficiencies

As one of Franciscan Health’s most critical applications supporting the entire health system, the Epic migration provided significant benefits to the organization, including:

  • enhanced capabilities and agility to support numerous IT environments;
  • faster and more advanced disaster recovery capabilities;
  • improved cloud consumption technology providing better tools and transparency to allow for easier expansion of virtual machines (VMs) based on demand;
  • simplified processes for application update cycles;
  • built-in enterprise-class security and compliance features.

According to recent industry research, the healthcare cloud computing market is expected to realize double-digit annual growth in the years ahead, with one firm estimating the market will surpass $50B by 2025.

“While the healthcare industry has been more cautious in its approach to cloud-based IT solutions than most industries, the current pace of adoption is increasing swiftly,” says Dr. Tim Calahan, Director of Healthcare Product Strategy & Management, Virtustream. “By migrating its mission-critical EHR application to the Virtustream Healthcare Cloud, Franciscan Health will have more transparency and control over its IT environment, including key factors like costs, flexibility, security, privacy and regulatory issues.”
