B&H Photo would like to share the announcement of the Hasselblad X1D II 50C, the second-generation medium format mirrorless camera, showing notable improvements in speed, handling, and a more intuitive design. The original X1D was championed for its sleek size, despite containing a large 50MP 43.8 x 32.9mm CMOS sensor. The X1D II retains the same sensor design, along with 16-bit color, a 14-stop dynamic range, and Hasselblad’s Natural Color Solution Technology to achieve impressive color rendering. This new model improves upon its predecessor with the inclusion of a 43% larger rear monitor, which now measures 3.6″ and has brilliant 2.36m-dot resolution, along with a touchscreen design, for bright, clear, and vivid viewing. The electronic viewfinder has been upgraded, too, and has greater 3.68m-dot resolution and higher 0.87x magnification for more realistic eye-level viewing. Live view frame rates have been bumped to 60 fps, as well, for more fluid rendering of movement. Other performance enhancements include a 46% faster startup time, reduced shutter lag and blackout time, faster continuous shooting to 2.7 fps, and overall faster response times and AF performance. Additionally, internal battery charging is now supported, the dual SD memory card slots both support UHS-II for faster transferring, and a GPS module has been integrated into the camera body for geotagging capabilities.

Complementing the new camera, Hasselblad is also announcing a new X-system lens—the first zoom of the system—the XCD 35-75mm f/3.5-4.5. This zoom provides a 28-59mm equivalent range, covering wide-angle to short telephoto focal lengths, and features an especially compact design to suit travel applications. The lens’s internal focusing design yields quick AF performance and full-time manual focus override and, like other XCD lenses, it incorporates a central lens shutter (leaf shutter) for full flash sync throughout the 68-minute to 1/2000-second shutter speed range.

Alongside the hardware announcements, Hasselblad is also debuting Phocus Mobile 2; a mobile workflow for editing X1D II 50C files on either an iPad Pro or an iPad Air (2019). The camera can be connected to these iPads via Wi-Fi or USB Type-C, and Phocus Mobile 2 enables import, editing, and exporting of raw files, full-resolution JPEG editing, and tethered shooting and remote camera control capabilities.

Looking forward, Hasselblad has announced the development of two additional items: the CFV II 50C Digital Back and the 907X Medium Format Camera. The CFV II 50C will succeed the CFV-50c as a unique V-system digital back. This new back will feature a 50MP 43.8 x 32.9mm CMOS sensor, tilting screen to support waist level-style shooting, and a fully integrated battery design for reduced overall size. The 907X will be a new camera body designed to accept the CFV II 50C, as well as having native support for the X-series of lenses. It will be the smallest medium format body Hasselblad has ever created, due to its modular design, which will accept an optional 907X Control Grip, 907X External Optical Viewfinder, and additional Hasselblad and third-party accessories.
