Healthcare innovators rely on a variety of business-critical applications to serve patients. The sheer number of applications often leads to performance and scalability issues, resulting in a need for flexible solutions that can protect sensitive patient data. Healthcare organizations have turned to the cloud for increased accessibility to information, efficient storage, easier collaboration, and better management of data. A recent study by Nutanix found that in just two years, healthcare companies’ hybrid cloud deployments is expected to nearly double from 19% to 37%.
“Our mission is to help our patients become as healthy as they can be and Nutanix allows us to remove some of the complexity we deal with day to day so we can focus on this mission,” said Tom Lockhart, IT Manager at Hastings Prince Edward Public Health. “We’re a small IT team, so I have to wear a lot of hats. Instead of worrying about our infrastructure, I can now focus on the applications running on top of it.”
Before Nutanix, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health relied on a variety of legacy servers to run healthcare applications including OSCAR open-source EMR software, SQL server databases, GIS applications, file and print servers, and other office productivity applications. Through the deployment of Nutanix’s HCI software, AHV virtualization, and Prism management, the healthcare agency can now provide care efficiently through faster deployment, and less time spent troubleshooting the infrastructure. Additionally, Nutanix helped the agency support more virtual desktops and maintain higher performance — at least 50% faster – helping healthcare providers focus on their patients rather than waiting for technology to work.
With Nutanix, the agency’s IT team doubled the size of its virtual desktop infrastructure solution and served more people at new sites, resulting in more patients receiving care faster, without adding more staff. Extending the solution to serve more people is as simple as adding a node. Freed from troubleshooting the infrastructure, the IT team can now focus on delivering better healthcare.
“In an industry where every second is critical, having the right infrastructure in place is essential. With Nutanix, the Hastings Prince Edward Public Health IT team no longer has to spend so much time on administrative tasks, but can instead focus on projects that will directly benefit their patients,” said Anton Granic, VP of Sales, Americas North & Canada at Nutanix. “By giving healthcare organizations confidence in their infrastructure, we free their teams to focus more on providing care for their patients.”
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health has plans for continued scale. The agency plans to integrate with partner agencies, as part of a healthcare restructuring initiative, and plans to look to Nutanix to help the IT team to integrate the environments without disrupting service or negatively impacting patients. As the agency grows, it is considering extending its partnership with Nutanix to support disaster recovery efforts and deliver solutions that leverage the elasticity of cloud while complying with healthcare privacy requirements.
