The heart of the Q2 Monochrom camera, and what sets it apart from its full-color counterpart, is the 47.3MP CMOS full-frame sensor, which has been optimized to record only grayscale. By eliminating a color array and a low-pass filter, the new monochrome-only sensor is able to capture greater detail and dynamic range beyond the abilities of RGB files that are converted to black-and-white post-capture.
Other features on the Q2 Monochrom include the built-in Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens, which focuses down to 6.7″ from the sensor plane; digital crop frames for emulating 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm focal length lenses; DCI and UHD 4K video recording, a 3.68m-dot electronic viewfinder, ISO sensitivity up to 100,000 (up from ISO 50,000 on the Q2) and a 3.0″ 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD.
To go along with the camera, Leica has also introduced a matching handgrip and yellow, orange, and green filters to complete the black-and-white picture-taking experience.
