WHAT: This year the 2019 IEEE Broadcast Symposium has an
impressive lineup of Keynote Speakers participating in the event.
Michelle Munson, co-founder and CEO of Eluvio will be speaking on
Tuesday, October 1 and Mark Schubin, Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE
Fellow will keynote on Wednesday, October 2.
Michelle Munson is the co-founder and CEO of Eluvio, a new
Berkeley-based start-up creating new software technologies for a
content-centric Internet focused on scalability, content protection, and
native commerce. She previously founded East Bay software company Aspera
in 2004 and led the company as CEO until May 2017, including through
acquisition by IBM in 2014. She and co-founder Serban Simu created the
Aspera FASP™ transport technology, an Emmy-award winning technology used
throughout the digital media supply chain for high-speed low cost secure
digital content transport, replacing satellite and traditional tape
based delivery technologies.
Michelle holds several patents and is a frequent speaker in the areas of
content networking, machine learning, block chain and cloud
infrastructure. She was the 2016 Charles Swartz awardee and is a SMPTE
Fellow. Michelle has dual B.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering and in
Physics from Kansas State University and was a Goldwater Scholar for
achievement in Science and Mathematics, and later a Fulbright Scholar at
Cambridge University where she received a postgraduate Diploma in
Computer Science. In 2016 she was named the IABM Woman Entrepreneur of
the Year and TV NewsCheck Woman of the Year, and she was named one of
the Most Influential Women in Business by the SF Business Times in 2017.
She was the 2006 KSU College of Engineering Alumni Fellow (the youngest
recipient ever), and is an active trustee for the National 4-H Council
and 2017 4-H Luminary for her leadership with youth.
Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE Fellow Mark Schubin has been working
in television since 1967, writing about it since 1972, and chairing the
HPA Tech Retreat program since 1998. He has shot for the Rolling Stones,
lit Luciano Pavarotti, mixed Stevie Wonder, hooked up the TV in Eric
Clapton’s bedroom, and performed forensic analysis for the Woody
Allen/Mia Farrow child-custody battle. He worked on Japan’s first
regularly scheduled HDTV broadcast, Kazakhstan’s first news network, and
Hong Kong’s first cable-TV system. He has also worked on standards
ranging from the VU meter to digitally compressed video transmission to
the national TV system of Barbados. His clients range from the
Metropolitan Opera to Sesame Street, MTV, The News Hour,
the AFL-CIO, the U.S. Congress, and the World Book Encyclopedia. His
writing has been translated into French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.

Marvin Kitman, writing for The Los Angeles Times syndicate, called him
“a leading thinker.” In the acknowledgements to his book Fast
Forward: Hollywood, the Japanese, and the VCR Wars, James Lardner of The

ability to make technical matters clear to a nontechnical person.”
Graham Binns of London’s Rediffusion Group said in the European
