MIAT College of Technology is now offering a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technician program at its Houston campus. This program incorporates theoretical lectures supported by hands-on learning platforms that will produce quality entry-level technicians who will have sound practical, technical and theoretical non-destructive testing knowledge upon their graduation. MIAT’s first Non-Destructive Testing class will begin Jan. 28. The technician program can be completed in seven months, and the advanced program can be completed in nine months.

Graduates of this new program will support a wide range of industrial sectors, which include, but are not limited to, energy production (for example, power plants, wind farms, and oil and gas exploration and production companies); aviation; manufacturing; and construction.

“With more than 50 years of career college experience, MIAT is uniquely positioned to offer hands-on training in a shorter period than traditional four-year universities can deliver. Our school equips the workplace with entry-level technicians who can hit the ground running,” commented John Willis, MIAT Houston campus president. “It is common knowledge that the United States is facing a growing gap in skilled workers. Employers are seeking to fill positions that are being vacated by Baby Boomer retirements. Across the country, an increasing number of government entities and businesses are becoming more engaged in initiatives to prepare students for careers in professional trades that can lead to rewarding and good-paying careers within less time. I am honored that employers have come to know and trust MIAT as an effective solution.”

MIAT conducted a feasibility study that included the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicating that NDT jobs are projected to grow by seven percent over the next 10 years. In 2016, the BLS reported that there were 77,000 individuals employed in non-destructive testing/inspection jobs. According to statistics reported by The Houston Chronicle, the average salary for an NDT technician in the greater Houston market in 2018 was $51,277. A search on the job search engine, Indeed, produces nearly 200 open positions for NDT Technicians or related positions in Texas.

“The oil and gas industry has been one of the leading employers in the Houston area for decades. Safety, reliability, government regulations, and environmental sustainability are driving factors for the oil and gas industry to maintain the integrity of its equipment. Non-destructive testing is the most effective way to accomplish this objective, and energy companies employ a variety of NDT specialists. Additionally, the aerospace and aviation industries have some of the most rigorous non-destructive testing requirements,” Willis explained.

All MIAT career education programs are developed collaboratively with industry representatives who serve on Program Advisory Committees. Programs taught at the Houston campus receive Certificates of Approval from the Texas Workforce Commission. MIAT offers morning and evening schedules, career counseling, financial assistance, and housing assistance to accommodate students. The Houston campus is certified to accept and accommodate international students.

Enrollment for the new Non-Destructive Testing program and all other MIAT programs is now open. Tours of the Houston campus are available by appointment. For more information, please visit https://www.miat.edu/programs/ndt/ or call 1-800- NEW GOAL.
