A new report from Navigant Research examines the global market for low power wide area (LPWA) communications nodes and networking equipment for electric, water, and gas utility use cases.

LPWA networking protocols are changing the game for utilities worldwide thanks to their relatively low costs and long battery life. Solutions that leverage LPWA are expected to accelerate the adoption of smart metering and other distribution network applications by all types and sizes of electric, water, and gas utilities. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, the global market for LPWA communications is expected to grow nearly sevenfold, reaching almost $500 million in 2028.

“In developed markets, the use of LPWA solutions by electric utilities will often apply to high device volume applications such as asset monitoring,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “In emerging markets, LPWA is anticipated to be used for metering combined with other grid applications, and may speed up networking investments due to the lower cost.”

Despite the growing use across power utilities, water utilities are expected to make the widest use of LPWA solutions by 2028, followed by gas. Water utilities will be increasingly driven by a need for better water conservation and reduced network losses. Gas utility deployments will be motivated in many places by safety concerns and regulatory mandates. Extensive new gas networks are being built in Asia Pacific and are expected to be built with smart meters and monitoring from day one.

The report, Market Data: Low Power Wide Area Networking for Electric, Water, and Gas Utility Applications, anticipates explosive growth in both the number of communications nodes deployed and the revenue generated by utilities investing in LPWA networks for smart metering and other applications. The Excel databook for this report includes a granular view of the deployment of LPWA communications nodes and infrastructure for the following five LPWA protocols: LoRa, Sigfox, Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT), Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA), and Long-Term Evolution Category M1 (LTE-Cat-M1). Nearly 100 tables and 45 charts break out the market by protocol, utility type, and region. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
