Press Ganey today released its white paper, Health Care Workforce Special Report: The State of Engagement. The report highlights new research from Press Ganey on engagement patterns, trends, and themes, and provides insights derived from analyses of engagement responses from more than 1.8 million physicians, nurses, and other health care employees surveyed in 2018. The key findings in the report offer essential context for leaders who are committed to understanding and addressing the unique needs of individuals and groups across their own organizations.

“An aligned and engaged health care workforce is a critical element in the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care,” said Patrick T. Ryan, Executive Chairman, Press Ganey. “To achieve such transformational performance, organizations must create a culture that resonates with all caregivers and aligns the entire enterprise around shared goals. The analyses in this report provide an essential context for leaders who are committed to understanding and addressing the unique needs of individuals and teams in their own organizations.”

The report provides in-depth analyses of trends that will help leaders effectively address workforce engagement in their own organizations. Key findings include the following.

  • High workforce engagement is associated with improved or maintained patient experience scores from one year to the next.
  • Employees whose jobs involve more direct patient care are less engaged than those whose responsibilities require less direct patient care.
  • Of the health care workforce overall, physicians are the least engaged, a factor driven largely by their difficulty disconnecting from work.

“High-performing organizations understand that building and sustaining a strong, healthy culture in which core values are consistently modeled and widely shared is good business and good medicine,” said Martin Wright, Partner, Strategic Consulting, Press Ganey. “Consistent measurement and benchmarking to achieve an engaged and resilient workforce is a requirement for providing safe and error-free care, driving continuous improvement, and delivering on the ideal patient experience. Health care leaders must understand the intricacies of their workforces’ engagement and leverage that information to design and deploy targeted interventions to achieve the greatest return on their human investment.”
