Synaptive Medical, a leader in automation and robotics, will deliver two presentations showcasing the capabilities of Modus V, Synaptive’s robotically controlled digital microscope designed for use in cranial and spinal procedures, during the 2019 Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Annual Meeting.

Modus V’s robotic arm moves automatically based on the positions of tracked surgical instruments. This empowers surgeons to operate continuously without removing their hands from the operative field to adjust the microscope. Along with other optical features such as automatic lighting adjustments and hands-free focal depth control, these hands-free capabilities offer surgeons informative and ergonomically friendly perspectives throughout delicate surgical procedures.

In a live 3D streaming event on Monday, October 21 at 10 a.m. PDT, titled, “Live Tumor Surgery in 3D using Synaptive’s Robotic Digital Microscope,” Dr. Costas Hadjipanayis will perform a live surgical procedure using Synaptive’s Modus V, as well as Synaptive’s Modus Plan™ automated tractography software, while Dr. Brian Nahed will moderate the surgery on site at CNS. The surgery will take place at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and broadcasted in the CNS meeting’s Xperience Lounge on the Exhibit Hall Floor.

On Tuesday, October 22, at 9:50 a.m. PDT in Synaptive’s booth (318), Dr. Hadjipanayis will deliver a surgical presentation featuring novel features of the robotic digital microscope.

A respected surgical neuro-oncologist, Dr. Hadjipanayis is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncological Sciences at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Site Chair, Department of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Union Square Director, Neurosurgical Oncology at Mount Sinai Health System Director, Brain Tumor Nanotechnology Laboratory.

“The tangible benefits of using Modus V have been clinically validated via multiple peer-reviewed publications but are most compelling when communicated visually in a surgical setting,” said Cameron Piron, president and chief strategy officer of Synaptive. “We’re grateful for this opportunity at CNS to show what the sum of this microscope’s features can accomplish in the hands of someone like Dr. Hadjipanayis, in terms of navigating patient-specific neuroanatomy while avoiding delicate brain structures that, if disrupted, could cause serious harm to the patient.”

Synaptive’s Modus V and Modus Plan products are part of the company’s suite of automated, integrated hardware and software offerings designed to extend healthcare providers’ abilities to offer safe, patient-specific neurological and orthopedic care.
