The 12th volume in the bestselling NSTA Press series of formative assessment probes helps teachers choose the best instructional path for lessons related to STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math. Uncovering Student Ideas About Engineering and Technology offers 32 probes that are short, easy to administer, and available in both English and Spanish. The probes are designed to find out what students in grades 3–12 know—or think they know—about everything from the purpose of technology to who can become an engineer to how an engineering design process works.

The new book is organized into four sections that explore what technology and engineering are, how to define problems, and how to design and test solutions. With titles like “Pizza Problem,” “Is Engineering Creative?” and “Is It Rocket Science?” students will be engaged in thoughtful discussion and start to ask new questions of their own.

The field-tested teacher materials explain the content in everyday language so that teachers can improve their own understanding of the science they teach. The teacher materials also include connections to A Framework for K–12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards. They provide summaries of the research on students’ ideas and suggest grade-appropriate instructional methods for addressing the preconceptions.
